4 Industries with Great Mobility
Editor's Note: The following is a guest post by Jessica Howington.

At the age of five, headstrong and determined to be a superhero, I gave very little thought of just how my dream career would be affected in the future. Of course, reality quickly turned life upside-down. For me personally, my husbands’ career has even molded my education pursuits since I know he is in for the long haul.

So, several changes and years into this crazed, frenzied ride and I have a lot of experience trying to find work that will fit my hectic lifestyle. I explored a lot of different options along the way. On the journey of getting to where I am now, and as I continue on to where I am going, I have come across some career paths that can be a great fit for any mobile lifestyle, particularly that of a military spouse.

Here are 4 industries with great mobility:

Healthcare: The medical industry is EVERYWHERE! Doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, dentists, assistants, you name it and they are needed nearly every place there is a military post. Not only can employment be found on base, but also in civilian hospitals, doctors’ offices, insurance companies, schools, and more.

Information Technology: Computers are used and depended upon by nearly every business and individual. We all rely on technology, and as our culture continues to shift into being more technologically dependent, the growth and potential is huge.  Whether you are an innovator, maintainer, or leader, information technology professionals have a lot of employment potential on or around military stations.

Education: Calling all teachers, administrators, tutors, and general educators! This is another great field for mobile military spouses. There are schools on or around most posts and if you are looking for something outside the school systems there are other options as well. Educators can provide family support services, work in a child development center, provide curriculum development services, work in school liaison offices, provide consultation services, and the list continues.

Entrepreneur: Move over Martha Stewart, military spouse coming through! Entrepreneurship is always a valid option when needing employment. I have met dozens of wonderful military spouses that have started and successfully grown their own small business that travels with them wherever they go. From baked goods and photography to childcare and personal tutoring, the sky is the limit!

While these industries can move more easily than others, there are certain items to keep in mind when moving. Some career paths do require licenses, certifications, or certificates. Before making a major PCS, check your gaining station, state, or country requirements so you are able to get a head start on any or all of the paperwork that will be required. Additionally, if you need to take a test to get a new or updated license, planning well in advance may make it an easier transition.

In addition to these great industries that offer mobile careers, there is always the option to work remotely from a home office, which many of the listed industries do offer! Numerous companies across the nation are changing their policies on flexible work and may offer the ability to telecommute part time or even full time. You can always look into companies that currently offer those arrangements or even inquire about flexible working options with your current employer.
